Luxury Wedding Invitations
Avoiding Invite Disasters!“It’s simply an invite,” you tell yourself. “What may possibly go wrong?” Famous last words, indeed! What could go wrong? More than you could imagine. Here are some issues to think about when preparing your invitations. Wording Oh, dear. How can you word the invite if you have a complex family? Unpleasant divorce cases, step-parents, birth parents, in-laws . . . family could be anything but straightforward to figure out. The important principle to follow is that the person (or people) listed on the invite should be the host (or hosts) of the wedding reception. If separated parents are co-hosting the event, they could both still be listed, though preferably on individual lines. Take caution in not giving credit where credit is due. In one recent wedding, the groom’s parents footed the bill for the entire lavish affair, however it was the bride’s parents whose names were on the invitations. At the wedding reception, numerous guests heartily thanked and complimented the bride’s mother and father on what a wonderful wedding and reception they'd sponsored, and the callous couple blithely took credit for everything. Obviously, the groom’s parents felt disappointed and unappreciated! In cases where the groom’s mother and father are paying, you may decide to place the names of both sets of parents on the invites. Typing errors and Misspellings “Really, are you kidding?” you might say. “Who does not look for typos?” Nonetheless, every year there are plenty of invitations that appear with problems in spelling and grammar. Frequently, these invites are of the do-it-yourself variety. If you plan to generate your own invitations, make sure you have someone else go through the text, ideally someone who is fantastic at English! One more detail to be meticulous about is the spelling of names. Let’s say you aren’t sure how to spell your old school roommate’s wife’s name. You may think, “Oh, potato, poTAHto, what’s in a name?” But when the invite turns up addressed to “Dan and Carrie” rather than “Dan and Keri,” the couple might be less than pleased. A name is much more than just a name; it’s part of your individuality. Take the time to telephone your friends and family when you are in doubt; this personal touch reveals that you really care and may motivate them to attend your special celebration. It’s in the Mail Other common problems revolve around the mailing of wedding invitations. First of all, make sure you allow enough Response time for guests to answer. A great rule of thumb should be to post your invites 8 weeks before the wedding ceremony. This generally provides invitees enough time to make travel plans and also to secure vacation days if required. This grace period should also give you time to react if some of your invitations are returned to you as undeliverable. But don’t let that happen to begin with! Just like the spelling of names, double check the addresses of your friends and family to be sure they are current and correctly written. Now WHERE am I going?! One of the worst wedding invite disasters you want to prevent is including faulty instructions or unreadable roadmaps to the wedding ceremony or wedding reception. Directions aren’t much of a problem in a small town, but in an unfamiliar urban center, finding your way about may be irritating and even scary to some people. Be careful of printing out directions word for word from the most recent mapping website. Such websites don’t always provide the most direct or logical routes, as numerous people have unhappily discovered firsthand. Unless you are a superstar with instructions and are totally positive that the directions are precise, you might consider traveling each of the routes outlined yourself (from the north, south, east, and west, as required). You may find unexpectedly closed roads, construction, or merely simple incorrect instructions. Oh, and it may be a good idea to incorporate a contact number on the invitation of a directionally-gifted friend with a mobile phone who would be willing to guide travelers to each location on the day of the event. Don’t allow these kinds of invitation disasters happen to YOU! With a little luck, and lots of preparation, your invites could go off without a hitch.
